The Research Assistant is mainly responsible for designing and constructing experimental setups related to the applied fields of renewable energy systems, DC microgrids, and electric vehicles at the Joint Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles R&D Center (JSEC) in the College of Engineering. You will also design industry-ready showcase prototypes, develop innovative solutions with high technology readiness, and help in conducting research. Working collaboratively with the JSEC director and other team members, you will explore the integration and optimization of these technologies to shape a bright and sustainable future.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Develops experimental and industry-ready PCB-fabricated prototype solutions involving power electronics, embedded systems, and computer communication.
Applies control, modeling and parameter identification, and embedded systems in developing innovative solutions.
Leverages expertise in modeling and design to construct lab-based and showcase DC microgrids with hierarchical control strategies and their digital twin in simulation.
Prepares research materials, including reports, presentations, and grant proposals.
Researches and develops battery energy storage systems (BESS) management and active balancing techniques also photovoltaic system (PV) modeling electric machines modeling, parameter identification, and control.
Performs logistical tasks related to the management of the labs.
Helps with research activities in the fields of renewable energy systems, DC microgrids, and/or electric vehicles.
Prepares and presents research findings in journal papers and conference presentations.
Assists in developing and conducting training workshops.
Gathers and analyzes data using various techniques, employing strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Assists in empowers junior team members through mentorship and actively contributes to securing research funding by participating in grant writing efforts.
Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to design, prototype, and analyze innovative systems.
Maintains meticulous research records and ensures data accuracy.
Performs all other duties in a professional, effective, and confidential manner.
Performs all other related duties as required or assigned by manager.
Education & Experience
Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering (EE) or equivalent from an accredited institute.
Completed courses in control, power electronics, electric machines, and/or renewable energy systems.
Minimum of (2) two years’ experience in lab equipment and setups for experimental validation, along with experience in research with two to three published journal articles aforementioned topics.
